How To Become A Professional Planner And Break Into Wedding Planning Jobs

Wedding planning jobs are not easy to find, as the vast majority of commercial wedding planners are independent and freelance. If you seriously want a career in wedding planning, you really need to plan to join them. It is a career which will suit someone with a passion for marriage and a belief in its spiritual values, and someone who recognizes the symbolism as an important part of that. It is crucial to realize from the start that your own role will be less of a decision maker and more of someone simply carrying out orders.


Most of the clients who approach a wedding planner come from the professional classes, and simply do not have the time to plan the event themselves. Getting a professional planner involved will add thousands of dollars to the eventual budget, so the saving in time will have to justify the extra expense. Most of these clients will be looking for something lavish and memorable, and will not have any objection to having to pay for it. As with any other service business, you will have some clients who will be very demanding and a nightmare to work with, and others who will just regard you as the expert and allow you free rein.

Wedding planner jobs often involve working long hours, and are definitely not suitable for anyone without a passion for the work. There is also no guaranteed income as you are an independent freelancer. As so many people planning weddings ask their friends for referrals, it can be a very hard business for a newcomer to break into. One of the greatest barriers to entry into this career is that income is not likely to be enough to sustain you in the first year. Unless you have substantial savings, this can make it extremely difficult to get started. Wedding planning is an almost impossible job to build up part time while you still have other work, as people expect you to be available during business hours.

On the positive side, the lack of the need for any formal education will count massively in your favor. Provided you can scrape together the money for the initial start-up, you have a chance. Wedding planning sounds a very glamorous business, but the reality is not quite like that. It is the client who makes all of the choices, and you just carry out orders. The compensation is the reward, and this can be considerable.

Although wedding planning is unlikely to make you rich, you can earn a very good living from genuinely helping other people. There is a lot of satisfaction to be gained when someone comes into your office with a beaming smile, to thank you for making their big day so special. If you have the genuine love of weddings and marriage which this job demands, and are prepared to tough it out through the lean years at the start, then you can carve out a deeply satisfying long term career by creating your own wedding planning job.
